These past two weeks were an exciting couple of weeks.  That is exactly what you are reading about right now.  The first highlight of these weeks was a basketball game between the fourth graders and the fifth graders.  Mr. Davis, our principal, coached the visiting team, while Mr. Brown (the middle school boys' assistant coach) coached the home team.  After the first period, the score was 6-8...home.  After the second period, the score was 15-9...home.  Then it was 17-11 after the third period with the home winning.  Close to the end of the fourth period, the score was 15-17, with the home team winning.  The visitors stole the ball and started to drive down the court.  The clock went, "3, 2, 1, rrrrrrrrr!" and the clock ran out on the visitors and the final score was 15-17--home team.

Last Thursday we had a substitute teacher named Mr. S.  Mr. S. is the father of Jonathan S. in the 2nd grade at our school.  Mr. S. was really nice.

We had tryouts for a dinner theater this Thursday.  Lots of people tried out.  We also had a mystery reader on Friday.  She was Madison's grandmother.  She read a book that was in German and English.  We practiced reading words in German.

Like I said, these last couple of weeks were really cool.  Click here if you want to see some pictures of what we did.

This week in class we have been doing many exciting things.  The whole class took the Star Reading test and have set a goal of points to reach for Accelerated Reader before the 9 weeks ends.  We also had our Valentine's Day party.  Congratulations to the winners (Jonah, Madison, and Makenzie) of the Valentine Box contest.    A thanks to all the parents who brought snacks for the party!!!

There was also a pep assembly before a big game.  Another thanks to our "mascot" (Sheila) for cheering us on!!

Big day on Thursday--SCIENCE FAIR!  You can do it, everybody!!  Thank you, Mr. D. for helping us with our projects.  (Winners were:  Anna, Nick, and Christa!!)

On Friday, we will be holding another pep assembly.  It will also be Jeans Day--"Fan"tastic Friday.  Remember to wear your TVCS shirts.  As you can see we have been very busy.  This is what we have been doing this week.

I wanted to share with you something very special that I learned about at the basketball tournament in OH.

In the first game, we played a team called Springfield Christian School.  All of the players on the team (and most of the fans in the crowd) had the number 55 on their jerseys and shirts.  Many of the parents had a shirt that said, "Chris Miller--55    He was ready, are you?"  After the game, I approached one of their fans and asked about this.  The gentleman told me a story about Chris Miller.  At only 12 years of age, he passed away while playing a game of basketball.  (He had a medical problem that his family didn't know about.)  Anyway, the gentleman I was talking to was actually Chris Miller's dad.  He was such a kind man and he took the time to tell me Chris's story.  He told me that Chris loved basketball, but he loved Jesus more.  Chris had accepted Jesus as his Savior, and his dad felt it was now his mission to spread Chris's story so that other kids would come to know Christ.  I found out about a website dedicated to Chris, and I wanted to share that website with all of you.  There is a story about Chris, a video of his life (and some shots of him playing basketball) along with Christian music and some fun games and links.   Meeting Chris--through his dad's story--touched me deeply.  Even though I never met Chris Miller, he made an impact on me.

Even though we won the championship, and we were very proud of our TVCS Middle School Boys and the entire LIONS team, the Lord quickly reminded me that it is only a game.  The goal of our lives should not be to win a championship or to score the most points, but to make sure we share the love we have found in Jesus Christ with everyone we know.  Visit this link often...I think you will really enjoy it!

Here are some things that have been going on in our 5th grade class:

We have a new student and her name is Madison M!

We have been making history pockets on ancient Egypt; they include facts, time lines, and pictures.

We are also in the middle of reading biographies on famous people and making Valentine boxes.  The boxes will be judged by Mrs. Newman and our class.  The one with the most votes gets the winning prize!  Prizes will also be given for the cutest and the most creative.

P.S.  We have 32 random acts of love/kindness reported on our board.  Go 5th grade!!  Also, Jared Boleyn was given the Fruit of the Spirit of Kindness Award in our Commons meeting.

This week we have been studying about Ancient Egypt in History class.  Also, our spelling words are from our Ancient Egypt lessons.

We have started a "random acts of love" board in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.  (His birthday was this week.)  We are going to try to do 100 acts of love or kindness before February 14th.  So far we have over 15.

Our marbles jar is almost full and everyone wants that pizza party!  Once our marble jar is full, we get a pizza party.

Our story quilt pictures are due Friday and everyone has their symbols on their border that represents something in the book that their group read.  We also have to have a scene drawn on the story quilt paper inside of the border.

I would like to tell you about my classroom and the kids that are in it.  There are twenty-one children in the classroom.  We are just like a family, only we are not related.

We do subjects like spelling, math, history, science, Bible, reading, language, writing, art, and music.  Mrs. Newman makes every subject easier by things she calls "Newman Nuggets".  These are tricks she has made up to help us remember things.  That not only makes things fun and easy, but it is also interesting.

We usually have breaks like snack, lunch, gym, recess, and right before lunch.  Sometimes we will not have recess or gym, but we normally do have both of them.  For gym we will have an organized game on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.  We do not call Wednesday plain Wednesday--we call it "Walking Wednesday" and that's where we walk many, many laps.  (We are adding them up to see how many miles we can walk in a year.)  On Fridays we do free days.

We have six elementary teachers in the school.  Mrs. McKinney is a great Kindergarten teacher.  Mrs. Thomas is a wonderful first grade teacher.  Mrs. deBlecourt is a kind teacher of second graders.  Mrs. Murphy is a teacher who loves her children dearly and loves to sing.  Miss Naylor is a teacher who loves to play very fun games and she is very polite.  Mrs. Newman is a teacher who loves her family and her students.

Mrs. Newman writes...I received a very nice summary of class activities from Preston S...but I have misplaced it!!  I do not usually lose things, and I feel terrible about it.  Please forgive me for not listing any activity descriptions here....

Today I will be writing to you about what the fifth grade has been doing for the past two weeks.

Over this period, each person in the fifth grade made a reading journal.  Each person has decorated their journals and we have already started a book by the name Rosa.  Rosa is about a poor girl who is a nomad.  A nomad is a person or group of people that constantly move from one place to another.  Rosa has both her mom and dad and a smaller brother and sister.  Rosa is the only one that goes to school and she doesn't like it all.  All of the kids make fun of her, and she always needs special help because she can't speak English very well.  Then she meets a dog she likes very much and it seems to like her.

I predict that she will start spending much more time with the dog, and will make a friend at school, too.

This week we have also experienced some interesting drills.  One of these drills was the "lock-down" drill.  Also, we have practiced the Shelter in Place drill.

A new week has started!  Monday the ACSI people came for our history class and our science class. They will be coming tomorrow and Wednesday.  We got a compliment on what a good class we are from one of the visitors!  Yea, fifth grade!!

We had Bible Dress Up Day on October 21.  Here is a picture of our class:

Thanks to everyone who brought something to our Bible Day Brunch!

On Wednesday, October 27, we had a Middle East Taste Testing.  We were brave and tried new things that we had never eaten before.  Mrs. Haikal even brought us some figs right off of a real fig tree in her yard!!

We had dates, yogurt (both homemade and from the store), pita bread w/ honey, sweets, and cheese.  Most of us like our "own" food the best!  Below, Anna samples the homemade Baklava, while Angela eats some of her Mom's pita bread.

Elias B. was our Public Relations Director for the weeks of September 12-23.  Here is his report...

"These are the things that we have been doing.  We have been having chapel for a couple of days for Spiritual Emphasis Week.  In art, we have learned how many ways you can use lines.  After every Friday, we receive "paychecks" from our jobs.  We tithe with our "money" and give to charities.

We also collect pennies for the Hurricane.  That is what we have been doing for a week."
